Visualizing Vermont’s Rivers from Above

Most of my work with rivers happens in close proximity to the water, either in a boat or underneath the surface. For this project, I took to the air to record and share the beauty of Vermont’s waterways, many of which have experienced unprecedented flooding over the past few years.

In capturing and sharing images of Vermont’s rivers, ensconced by the woodlands and dirt roads characteristic of the state, I aimed to give viewers the same infatuation with these rivers that I have always felt. Most of this work took place on the White River, a stretch of water that I know well from years of canoeing. My time spent on the water proved handy, as I knew which areas had experienced changes in morphology from new rapids that have emerged.

As part of the grand opening of Dartmouth’s Hopkins Center, cellist Yo-Yo Ma premiered We Are Water: A Northeast Celebration. This show featured some of my imagery as a backdrop for the songs and stories that celebrated how waters of the North connect us to each other and to our past, present, and future.
