About Hayden
Hayden Miller is an aquatic ecologist, filmmaker, writer and kayaker who tells the stories of the world’s rivers. Born and raised exploring the streams of New England, Hayden has spent the past five years traveling 2,500 miles down rivers across the globe.
While pursuing a degree in biology, Hayden realized the power that visual media has to draw people’s attention to the beauty and fragility of the world’s waterways. Further, he believes that the best way to learn about rivers — and to share them with others — is to spend time on the water.
His 60-day source-to-sea journey down Australia’s longest river led him to the National Geographic Society, where he now works on the Perpetual Planet Expeditions program, which recently conducted a cross-basin study of the Amazon River from the Andes to the Atlantic.
Closer to home, he has been working with communities in Vermont to capture flood-prone rivers through drone imagery, and his current project is focused on Virginia’s Rappahannock River — one of America’s most endangered waterways.
Hayden holds his BA in biology and environmental studies from Dartmouth College.
